The only thing missing is a right shift key, which is annoying.

Soon you'll discover that Sticky Keys part of the Windows accessibility features is your best friend. With Sticky Keys on, you don't need to simultaneously hold down the shift or Alt or Control keys and a letter key. Press the shift key, then press the letter you desire very handy for initial caps in a sentence.

The Sony has a caps lock key. Our fresh UXN took 1. Waking from sleep takes about 20 seconds on the UXN, not an instant-on PDA but bearable given the computer's full-blown Vista power. They aren't blazing fast, but they're certainly usable. Photoshop is a bit sluggish, Dreamweaver runs with reasonable speed and some less demanding games run passably though not admirably.

Keep in mind this is a palmtop computer and not a 17" desktop replacement though. The UX use Intel's chipset the same chipset used on standard Intel-architecture notebooks , has a gig of DDR2 RAM soldered to its tiny motherboard the machine can handle 2 gigs max but Sony doesn't offer a UX with this option , and either the 32 gig solid state flash memory drive on the UXN or a 1.

Graphics are handled by Intel's integrated GM which uses megs of shared system memory Windows reports megs. Though the UX only manages a 2. If you plug in an external monitor at x Aero will continue to run, but up the resolution to x or higher and it turns off.

Gaming on the UX isn't the challenge we expected. Newer games that aren't hugely demanding in the 3D department actually did better because they support the computer's native resolution which means the stylus works.

We tested the Sims 2 and it ran fine, though not blazingly fast and most visual effects were turned down; Quake 2 and Age of Empires II though you must use x resolution and forego the stylus. Processor: 2. We downloaded the latest Intel driver from Intel's web site and the 3D graphics score jumped up to 2. Oddly doing the same for our Vaio TX with the same Intel graphics chipset decreased speed, but in the UX's case it's definitely worthwhile.

We ran the PC Mark tests with an external monitor connected, since the graphics test require x resolution. While these numbers aren't up to today's fast dual core machines, they're surprisingly good for a handtop and comparable to 2 to 3 pound ultralight notebooks other than the integrated graphics, which are a bit lower than average. The 40 gig disk drive has about 15 gigs free as shipped with Windows Vista and bundled full and trial versions of software.

That's enough to store required apps, but not enough room for those with extensive iTunes video libraries to go wild. This card is fast enough for ReadyBoost, though we didn't get a worthwhile performance gain using it and resuming from hibernation was slower. We used to love software bundles, but these days you get a lot of bloatware.

The tiny UX even gets its share of added software and trialware you'll probably want to remove to conserve precious disk space we gained 5 gigs by removing Norton, MS Works, a variety of software trials and SQL Server which is used by the Vaio Media Server-- which most won't use on a palmtop computer.

It's reliable, comes with good management software and good security support. We found the UXN had better WiFi range than the UXP, though the hardware is the same the software seems to provide more power to the radio when in low signal areas.

Bluetooth behaves well if such a thing can ever be said and the Sony uses Toshiba's Bluetooth stack. It's strictly for data and there's no software for making voice calls. There's a SIM card slot under a tiny hump on the left side, affixed with a single tiny phillips head screw the door must be closed securely or the Vaio will complain that the SIM door is open.

So yes, you could pop your phone's SIM in there, but by the time you take out your phone's battery, remove the SIM, unscrew the door on the Vaio and pop the SIM in there you could've already checked your email with your BlackBerry or Treo. Or use your 3G Bluetooth phone as a wireless modem for better speeds assuming the phone has Bluetooth 2.

The UX is sold locked to Cingular, but we're told you can still call Sony support to get an unlock code should you wish to use another carrier's SIM card in the Vaio. Cingular's connection manager software is pre-installed and is easy to use though it's an older version than that currently available on Cingular's web site. The UX has very good reception on Cingular's network and we got around k. Do raise the antenna, it gets you two bars more reception.

The UXN comes with a 30 day Cingular trial. The UX ships with a mAh battery that slides onto the back comprising the right grip. An extended battery approximately doubles runtimes and makes for a humpy grip that's actually easier to grip than the standard battery. The UX will not lie flat on its back with the extended battery, though it will still fit in the docking station.

The standard battery lasted us 2. Lowering the display brightness has a surprisingly small impact on battery life, unlike most notebooks. The UX comes with a very compact charger, that's about the same size as the PSP's and doesn't add much weight or bulk to a travel bag.

Given the full power of Vista and the UXN's incredibly small size, it could be far too easy to leave sensitive data behind in a cab or at a cafe. Please help me! I am sure that when dismantling the laptop, you have accidentally removed the tape sticked on the IB inverter board.

The IB is usually laid inside a transparent cubic plastic tube located under screen. Please take the IB out of the tube and wrap it with transparent sellotape around it as spiral shape from head to end till IB is fully wrapped.

Remember not to remove any sellotape sticked on mainboard. Thank you for those links! Could be memory related problem. Try that first. Recently there was an spark from the cooling vent area and it followed bit of smoke. After that the cooling fan stopped working. I also realized that there is a thin strip of line on my display. However, still the laptop is working. That is beyond my affordability. Could anyone suggest me what might be wrong with the laptop?

Is it enough just replace the fan or the whole motherboard has to be replaced? I cannot tell without looking at the laptop. From your description I assume that you have a fried component on the motherboard and replacing the cooling fan will not help. Dear cj, I was also fearing that a component on the mother board is fried.

However, when I followed your clues and checked both the motherboard and cooling fan area, I found out something interesting. Actually the smoke was coming from the dust gathered in the cooling fan area and I am still not sure about the sparks. Anyway, after cleaning the 1 inch thik layer of dust from the vent area everything is back to normal. Even the display is ok. Is there a method of reattaching it, or should I find a replacement keyboard? I discovered one of my RAM chips was bad, indeed.

On one occasion, I noticed the timer had not progressed and the progress bar looked erratic but working. I lifted the laptop with my right hand grasping the right side of the keyboard.

The timer had jumped to its correct time and the progress bar displayed as expected. I put the laptop down and the timer froze. The progress bar went wonky again. I was thinking of putting rubber padding underneath the mainboard where the ATI chip is located. I was also thinking about taking the fan and heatsink off and putting one or even two thin copper or aluminum squares with thermal grease between the ATI chip and the heatsink.

I have tried removed the cmos battery bur it does not help. Anyone has another way to bypass it? I got problem with my Sony laptop VGN cr, no led, no power at all, I think something goes wrong with power supply. Can some one tell me where to buy sony power supply or where to down load diagram of sony vgn cr??? Tks a lot!!!!

Hi, can any one show me where to download diagram for power supply of sony vgn cr????? Many thanks!! Actually both the speakers are not working. External speakers and headphones are working properly while connecting them in it.

But I dont know, what is the problem in the internal speaker? Should I reinstall the driver? Kindly, assit me to fix this problem. Neither the modem nor the LAN ethernet port seem to be detected by the operating system — Vista Business.

BIOS options seem to be extremely limited. How do I enable the modem or LAN ports? Could be software related problem. Have you tried reinstalling device drivers for the modem and LAN? If still no help, most likely you have a faulty motherboard and it has to be replaced. If anyone can help, I would really appreciate it. Thank you. Thanks for the quick response.

There are only 2 screws on top and the bottom seems to be attached to the hinge. I tried opening it up but could only get it to open halfway. Sir i am having a sony laptop VGN-FE41Z of which i am looking for a complete service manual can you provide me with the same please. The wire dose not look like a copper one. Inside the insulation looks like a string. What can I do to fix my blunder?

Okay I have a Sony Vaio laptop at work I need to replace the keyboard on. No one seems to be able to tell me how to dismantle to replace this part in the model that I have.

Test the power adapter first. Make sure the laptop is getting power from the wall. I have barely used it and left it in pristine condition. If I move the top of the laptop toward me, sometimes the image comes back to normal. If I move it backward, then the image freezes and goes white again. External monitor works fine. I opened the top and bottom of the laptop, and checked the connection on both sides, it seems fine.

Is it possible that the cable is getting squished in the hinge.. Lately I have been using the laptop without the LCD bezel, and I removed the left speaker to give the cable more breathing room. I think this is ridiculous! Have you ever seen something like this? Your description sounds like a problem with the LCD screen. Apparently there is a bad solder joint somewhere on the LCD controller and it fails intermittently.

It depends on what kind of noise you have. In some cases cleaning the fan will help. Can you or anyone post it? FWIW the one listed here is the previous series. Hey Gecko I have the same problem with the wireless switch on a vaio FE41m did you managed to solve the problem?? Please help!!! I had the same problem with my fan. I suggest you clean it using cotton buds soaked in soapy water then lubricate the fan bearing with castor oil using an injection needle.

It recently stopped functioning. When I power the unit on it sounds like it is starting normally. Where do I need to start? Charlie Blair, Could be memory failure. Try reconnecting memory modules, make sure they make good connection with the slots. Try removing memory modules one by one. Test the laptop with each module separately. One of the modules could be bad and the laptop will start when the bad module is removed.

I have sony vaio laptop, buy from Spain, malaga. When I push the power button the power led comes on and stays on for just a few seconds and turns off. Is this a power problem or something else? I need help finding a part to buy and replacing the DC jack. What could this be. Thanks for any help you can give me. Note: I already replace my Hardisk with the new one, cause i assume there a problem with my old hardisk, but it not resolve that problem.

Yesterday, I was watching a video online and my computer was on the charger. Then, all of a sudden, the computer shut down, and made a crashing type of sound, which worried me. Then, after A minute, I pressed the power button to on the computer and the power was not working, meaning the computer just does not turn on , and I tried so hard to turn it on, but it just does not. Can you tell me what the problem might be as to why my laptop just does not turn on?

Are there any solutions? I mean I had files in my computer and I am just so worried about it. Thanks so much! Good Luck. Has anyone done this before? Can you help? Has anyone tried this? I am looking for Scemetic diagram of the mother board. I want to repair it. Because I have a power problem. It does not start. Looking for your help. Hey all, i hav sony vaio VGN-s series with 1.

When i slapped it little, it starts working… and after few days… it power on but nothing on screen….. Nice resource! Need to swap hard drive. Could be memory failure. Try replacing the memory module with a new one and test the laptop again. Do you have two memory modules in your laptop?

Try removing them one by one. If one of the modules is bad, the laptop will start properly when the bad module is removed. Any one to help?? Well ……. I guess that depends on the size of your lawn. But yeah, thanks guys. I can take care of my lawn myself, but a couple of beers sounds great. It is fantastic and hope it will remain up to date.

It saves alot of money to those who wants to do the job own their own. Tried your guide for VGN-N but there still seems to be something holding the keyboard as I am unable to release the 5 tabs.

So the trick is to keep prising the keyboard at the end where the 3 screws were and it will eventually unstick. This is Khondker from Bangladesh. It was working fine for 4 months. But now a problem has appeared. The problem is — When I switch on or power my laptop. It starts. The power indicator light remains green. But my Lcd screen appears black. I reinstalled my system, but no progress.

At the time of booting, my screen shows light for 1 second, after that it remains black. If I plug other monitor it shows the screen there properly. But my laptop screen remains black. The bottom panel was easy enough to remove, but that only gets me access to the RAM and the Wireless card. Go to the device manager and find the webcam in there. Right click on the webcam and uninstall the driver. Now reboot the laptop and let it detect the webcam and reinstall the drivers.

This might help. I have a sony laptop pcg-9s1p, recently it bootup and go to the windows screen them shut down. What wrong with it. Can anyone help me? Please can someone help me? It would be of great help, please and thanks!!! Hi, Thank you for all of your great efforts to prepare this web site. I am not a technican just an enthusiast replaced the screen in 1 hour without any rush. Can anyone tell me how to open the LCD screen and what the price of it.

What great links for the sony service manuals. Thanks again for all your work! I want detailed service manual for laptop motherboard. Can someone tell me where can I find one.

Sony no longer support this model. All drivers updated. Any ideas or suggestions? Take a look at the screen bezel and somewhere in the lower left or right corner find the laptop model number. By the way, is the laptop still bootable? Does anybody know where I can find one? Hi I have a Sony Vaio from about 9 months now I have a problem model is PCG-3J1L charger works just does not want to transfer to the battery when the charger cord removed immediately otherwise dim goes perfectly Can anybody help or recommend the service.

PS The laptop was not bought from Bulgaria there is no guarantee! Thank you in advance! I believe all Sony laptops sold with at least 1 year warranty. There must be some kind of warranty even in Bulgaria. Have you tried calling the official service center? It worked perfectly fot 2 weeks, and then vertical red stripes appeared on the screen. My local technician said it was impossible to repair: something to do with a tfs?

Searching on the internet, I found that there is a recurrent grapic card problem on vaio fz series. Is it possible to fix this problem?

I have looked all over for problems, and apparently Vaios have a lot of problems related to the trackpad. Maybe the trackpad simply disabled? Also take a look at the trackpad software installed on your laptop. The problem is that when I power up with or without battery the screen displays Vaio logo momentarily and ever so quickly fades away.

I cannot even get output to an external monitor to view bios or the os. Take a closer look at the laptop screen after it fades away. Can you see a very faint image? If yes, try replacing the inverter board. I am only abel to see something if I set ON but the BIOS come out 2 times and all strange letters while in the external monitor it is showed perfect.

Thanks for this interesting page. I need to change the keyboard and I need instructions on how to do this. I would, however, prefer a few more words about the difficulty of particular tasks. OK, so I am a noob. Just thinking my comment might help someone. I got my Sony laptop blown up last night due to incorrect adapter.

Now that its blown id like to fix it myself and want to know how to go about doing it. Toward the right half of the screen it appears to be fine. I am not sure if it is the screen or an inverter or something else. I would really appreciate some guidance. The screen backlight still works, it means the inverter board works properly. Does it look something like this?

This is LCD screen failure. My keyboard is nonfunctional after spoiling some water across it:. Does anyone know of a quick fix?? When you say the screen goes blank, does it mean the backlight still there but there is no image? Test your laptop with an external monitor. Can you get image on the external monitor? Use an external USB mouse. Right click on the touchpad and uninstall it. Restart the laptop and let it re-detect the touchpad. I have never been able to plug to an external monitor.

Hi guys, I have a sony vaio vgn-avp which is now 6 or 7 years old. Although the laptop is old, whenever I go to my mothers house I still use it, doing so now ubuntu and xp. The laptop currently has 1. So my question if someone can help me is, is it hard to upgrade all the hardware inside and keep at least the screen? Laptops are not very upgradeable. There are not many parts you can upgrade, except memory, hard drive and in some cases CPU. This requires OS reinstall or cloning. Hi , fantastic job, great selection of manuals, I am looking for 1 in specific, Sony Vaio VGN Z11, if anyone can help with this, please send me a link.

Hi , fantastic job, great selection of manuals, I am looking for 1 in specific, Sony Vaio PCG — KM, if anyone can help with this, please send me a link. Both the keyboard and touchpad have stopped working, although F2 and F8 work when booting. New hard drive fitted with fresh install, this did not help.

Not a very common model apparently.
