The first commercially produced Roller Derby skateboard was offered for sale in and since that time the sport has continued to increase in popularity on a global scale. Many believe that skateboarding could be seen as the embodiment of the extreme outlaw image, as its unique style and culture are difficult for members of the older generation to appreciate. As a sport, skateboarding continually seeks to redefine itself, achieving new limits on many levels.

The sport has also impacted on snowboarding, which has borrowed many of its moves and something of its style. Street skating is hard to master and can be performed on almost any suitable obstacle such as park benches, handrails, loading ramps, staircases or other inclines. As with BMX, vert skating takes place in a half pipe, though pools and basins are often adopted by vert skaters with limited access to a custom built space. In simple terms, a half pipe arena resembles a big U shaped area, which enables skaters to go up and down inside of it.

There are basically two main types of skateboard; stunt boards and cruiser boards. It is interesting to note that skateboarding is one of only a handful of extreme sports that have been embraced by youngsters around the world, and as such, has long moved out of the underground and into the mainstream in many countries.

Break dancing is thought to have been influenced by earlier dance styles such as the Lindy Hop as well as the Charleston. Some moves have their origins in martial arts and street fighting and a whole genre of dressing has grown up around this urban dance style, typically including jeans or shorts worn low, t-shirts, baseball caps and sneakers.

The dance is rarely done on a soft surface so accidents and injuries are commonplace and it is not unknown for a dancer to break their neck when a move goes drastically wrong. Break dancers move the feet sideways and onto the toes, spin on knees, head, elbows or hands as is often seen in rap videos where elements of this dance prevail.

Hammer regularly incorporate aspects of break-dancing within the visuals associated with their work. Many enthusiasts involved in the world of BMX, Skateboarding and Break-dancing are tattooed, some extensively, and the cultures overlap on many levels. In fact, in New York and other large urban populations around the world, a whole genre of tattooing has grown up around these sports and this is reflected in the designs adopted by those within the scene. This year at the games, favourite tattooists included, Jason Saga, Bugs, and the boys from Into You, though there were also many foreign visitors with tattoos sourced overseas.
