The high jump is a mirror image of the floor exercise, which shows how ill-advised this control scheme is. The diving events ask you to spin the analog sticks to match the balls circling your diver. Not only is this extremely tedious, it in no way captures the extreme focus needed by real-life competitors. These shallow excursions are so distant from the real thing it's almost laughable. Even the tutorial is a failure in Beijing The rules of judo are never explained, so you'll have to figure out on your own what terms such as "yuko" and "ippon" mean.

Not that it matters much--you'll just be matching directional arrows most of the time. The skeet-shooting tutorial tells you to pull the trigger to fire but never explains how to actually hit the clay pigeon. You'll have to figure out on your own that you have to swing your gun while you fire and, unlike in real life, you're not supposed to lead the target.

The pathetic learning tools make these simple events overly complicated. There are some events that are utterly impossible even after you learn the necessary strategies and level up your athlete. Kayak is a cruel joke. You have no control over your tiny watercraft. Even if you somehow manage to pass through the appropriate gate, the game often won't register your success.

Table tennis is just as pointless. Your giant body covers up an insanely high percentage of the table, making it impossible to see the ball if it's coming directly at you.

Paddle Left: S. Heavy Left: A. Speed: H and K. Switch front man: J. Table Tennis Serve: J or K. Move character: W, A, S and D. Judo - When you see a triangle with an arrow pointing upwards press W, downwards S, left A and right D.

To escape or make your opponent submit use A and D. A bit messy maybe but if you've played the game you'll understand it I hope :. DEMONisbest 13 years ago 3. Two more things to add: Launching from springboard at the start of beam and higher difficulty of uneven bars and landing from beam is done by pressing right arrow.

Thnx it really helped me :D. Thx a lot man, but the controls are really weird Petya21 13 years ago 7. Thats really great. Helped a lot. But the Long Jump and Triple Jump are missing. I remember making triple jumps, but I tried every combination I could think of for Long Jump. There is an interesting amount of detail where everyone in the background looks and acts exactly like they should. If you are after a game that does exactly what it says on the tin then this is for you.

This May Cause controversy, but I have never considered tapping two buttons in rapid succession or endlessly waggling a joystick to be fun. It wasn't fun when I was playing Daley Thompson's Olympic Challenge in , and it sure as hell isn't fun now. In fact, the only factor that remains fun about the experience is watching the pained expression on a fellow player's face as they trigger the early on-set of arthritis while systematically destroying their gamepad.

The problem is, three-quarters of the events are carat bollocks - and in the remaining fields the Olympian skills of AI competitors far outweigh your own nandrolone-free digits. The videogame rendition of the Beijing Olympics is a smooth and shiny one, and vaguely fun in two player, but its frantic, pointless, Sisyphean button mashing couldn't stand at greater odds to the human drama, elation and despair of the real thing.
