It can be very problematic if these orphans are not removed cleanly. For giggles, go into Device Manager and click on 'View' menu and select 'show hidden devices' and then you can see ghosts that will sometimes make installing new drivers an issue.

Sometimes right clicking and uninstalling these greyed-out-ghosts will help, but not always. Everytime you reboot it can end up being another search and destroy adventure. Good grief. This software can make things a lot less exasperating. Be careful though to go into Display Driver Uninstaller options first. You don't want it to delete stuff you need like your perfectly functioning display driver, for instance.
